Our History

Our historical roots in Granby are deep.

Granby Congregational Church, UCC is the re-union of two Granby Churches — First Congregational Church and South Congregational Church. In 1739 First Congregational Church was founded by the Connecticut General Assembly as the Salmon Brook Society. In the very beginning, people met in the Hayes Tavern followed by two other locations before settling into the sanctuary located at 219 North Granby Road. In 1872 a small group left First Congregational Church to form South Congregational Church at 242 Salmon Brook Street. For the next 150 years, each church grew and encouraged their members to give back to the community. In the 1980’s the churches began to partner in various ways. They shared summer worship and pastoral care while one minister took vacation. More recently both churches shared Christian Education programs for children and youth. Both churches began to ask if it made sense to have two UCC congregations in one relatively small town. The questions and conversations about reuniting to form one church began in earnest in 2018. In the spring of 2022 both churches voted to reunite and become Granby Congregational Church, UCC effective January 1, 2023. We are extremely excited about our new church and our future in Granby and in the wider community.
